Conservative Repression In Spain

Click here for an article by the Editorial Board in the New York Times telling of a law just signed by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, leader of the conservative party which controls both houses of the legislature. The harsh austerity measures the government has embraced in the recent financial crisis have given rise to many large popular demonstrations in protest. Now peaceful protesters may find themselves subject of fines of at least 30,000 euro; even as much as 600,000 euro. (The opposition party seems poised to make large gains in the next election.)
