Bill Gates On U.S. Health Care - Is This Guy A Socialist, Or What?

[From Big Government (A Breitbart site)

Bill Gates Supports Socialized Medicine: ‘I’d Take Any Rich Country’s Medical System Over Ours’

by Charles C. Johnson

Bill Gates of Microsoft fame (or infamy)  visited the Claremont Colleges this past week. You can watch that visit here. What follows is a transcript typed by one of my associates of that event. Gates, after discussing his foundation’s work, had harsh words for America’s health care system.
Our health care system has huge problems. It’s got equity problems where the poorest in the country of all the rich countries our poorest quarter get the worst health care so the accessibility is a huge problem.
We spend 17.8 % of GDP, the number two, which is Switzerland, spends 12.3% so you have — it’s mind blowing — you have over a five percent of GDP difference. That means that one out of every twenty people in the country are excess people in our health care system that other countries that get better results than we do, don’t have.  If you take inefficiency disadvantage like that, than you take how much we spend on defense versus everybody else, and how much we spend on legal stuff versus everybody else, you can start to say, ‘Wow. How do you stay competitive with those things?’ So our medical system has to change. I happen to like the Swiss system and the German system the best, which are not a single payer Canadian or British type system, but I’d take any rich country’s medical system over ours. Ours is provably the worst. [Audience laughter]. It is the most expensive and the least equitable.
Gates walked back a bit from that statement. “Now you have to be a little careful, because everybody else drafts off of us. We do a lot of the research. We do more basic research, our consumers pay more per drug. What other countries do is watch what happens here. If something is cost-effective, they adopt it, usually with about a three-year lag. Many of the things we do, like care at the end of life, or various therapies that are unbelievably expensive,  they just don’t adopt those things. “
In other words, the Europeans have death panels. [Huh?]

That might be an unfair characterization, if Gates hadn’t himself said something similar in July 2010.  Gates, whose foundation purports to support the equal worth of every human life wherever it is lived, makes an exception in favor of “death panels.” [That's a lie.]

Could that be the way our medical system has to change?  It seems likely. After all, his father, Bill Gates Sr., served on the board of Planned Parenthood.

Meanwhile, back at the Claremont Colleges, Gates insults the American public.

“There’s a true schizophrenia,” Gates noted. “If you talk to voters, they think the federal government spends too much money and they should spend less, they say, ‘Yeah, absolutely.’ Then you name specific things like Pell grants for students and they say, ‘No, not that.’  How about NIH, medical research funding? “No, you shouldn’t really cut that.’ Pretty soon you prove that what the American public is against is arithmetic.”

(Maybe so. In fact, 71% of Americans — a clear majority — supports reducing foreign aid, according to an Economist/YouGov poll. ) [Newsweek: A 2010 World Public Opinion survey found that Americans want to tackle deficits by cutting foreign aid from what they believe is the current level (27 percent of the budget) to a more prudent 13 percent. The real number is under 1 percent.]

[Here's an excerpt from an article by metzold on The Connect U.S. Fund entitled "Reducing the Deficit: Will foreign assistance be targeted?"

"Here are several good reasons to protect the foreign aid budget from cuts. Maybe the most important one is the international commitments the United States has entered. The increase in foreign aid – which Simpson and Bowles argue against – is a logical step toward the United Nations Millennium Development Goals that all 192 UN member states have agreed to achieve by the year 2015. One of the main long-term goals is that the western countries will dedicate 0.7 percent of their gross national income (GNI) to development assistance. Cutting the already meager foreign assistance budget – which currently represents less than 0.2 percent of U.S. GNI [emphasis added]– would mean further deferring this commitment."]
Later, Gates endorsed the DREAM Act, which would make illegal immigrants throughout the country into automatic citizens, and the death tax, which both he and his father support. Throughout his talk, Gates criticized U.S. military spending, which he says gets in the way of health care spending.

“There are topics I know more about and there are topics I know less about,” he answered, but went on.

“I think the defense budget needs to shrink. It won’t shrink dramatically enough to make room for these health care cost increases. Unless you bend the curve on medical costs, you’ve got a huge problem. You end up spending so much of society’s resources on people past the age of 65, which is fine in a way, but what that means that you’re not re-investing into the young. If you look at state budgets over the last twenty years, the amount of money for education as a whole — particularly higher education because that gets hit first  — that’s gone down very substantially. California’s a perfect example of this…

"In terms of military things, obviously, war is the biggest waste of money there is, and the theory that you can send your army over some place and that somehow those people will like you better, I think that’s a very difficult theory. I mean, even if you didn’t accidentally shoot a few people every once in a while, so I’m still trying to understand that one. They’re going to like us, they are really going to like us. Because we’re going to be there for a while and then we are going to leave and we will have shot people. “
The military may cost a lot — and it does — but the cost of appeasement is far greater and part of what makes that bill never come due is a strong military that wards off potential threats.  If Europe paid for its own defense, it couldn’t afford the welfare state it sneeringly advertises and the medical system Gates so loves. Arms races are expensive and Gates should be proud, not dismissive, of the country that keeps the Pax Americana.

[Here's an excerpt from a Wikipedia article on the U.S. military budget:

The 2009 U.S. military budget accounts for approximately 40% of global arms spending and is over six times larger than the military budget of China (compared at the nominal US dollar / Renminbi rate, not the PPP rate).]

[And here's a graph from another Wikipedia article comparing countries' military expenditures:

Man, I can't believe the formatting problems that graph has caused me.

After the jump, read the comments posted on this thread at Big Government.  My guess is they don't like Bill.  Here's a typical comment, picked more or less at random:

Reason_For_Life - March 20th, 2011 at 4:22 pm
Gate loves the German medical system perhaps Germany is more in line with his values.
Gates should pack up and move to Deutchland where he will find many, many people that agree with him. He'll be able to pay the tax rates that he, his father and Warren Buffet feel are fairer. Perhaps he can convince the Germans to implement a 100% inheritance tax. He can have the first class medical care the he believes exists there. He can have an entire culture that is obedient and respectful and who follow orders.
A perfect world awaits him, a world filled with nothing but people saying "Ya, Herr Gates".
What's keeping him?

[I didn't cherry-pick this list and select only the worst comments; this is the whole enchilada.  Enjoy.]

I find it wholly fascinating that people who have had the fortune to achieve everything they desire in this world by virtue of the benefits our society provided them are now the very people who want to make sure they are the only ones who have these benefits.

They can't afford it either which is why they are broke too. When you're broke you don't go crazy spending trillions more…whoops we do.
It is more than past time, since WW@ ended in '45 and the COld war ended in '91 to let the euro's protect their own butts and fund the cost. And for every natural disaster that occurs o their soil they can pay for the clean-up and reconstruction too. Unless, of course they want to start reciprocating with paying for our military and reconstructing our cities and towns after every hurricane and tornado or flood.
Hey Bill, go back to work and keep busy producing things and shut up about crap you are clueless aout.

You Cannot!
#1. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
#2. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
#3. You cannot help little men by tearing down big men.
#4. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
#5. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

Of course. Once they're on the top, they want to stay there. And to do that, they increase the barriers of entry. Should come to no surprise.

Why is it the people that don't have to worry about medical care, expense, insurance or anything the ones that feel the need to weigh in on the subject?

So, if he wanted he could pay for everyone's health care for the next few years, giving the taxpayers a break, I mean it's what all libs would do with my money right? Spend it on really good stuff …

98ZJUSMC - March 20th, 2011 at 2:16 pm
Sure seems that way.

Nothing shuts down a progressive faster than that fact. All the angelic bloviating about Euro-wonderfullness has been enabled by the largess of the American taxpayer. Over with.
Leave Europe and shut off the money tap. Now.
Well see how long it takes the preening little leeches to completely trash the German economy.

Bill Gates avails himself of the best private-sector medical care his money can buy. By his personal conduct he disproves his stated beliefs.

So WHY doesn't Bill Gates take some of the BILLIONS in the Foundation and create an insurance company that gives FREE insurance to people if he is worried about them? Use the same criteria as medicaid and WHAM-O… bunch of people off the taxpayer's dime and on his. This way, he doesn't have to turn me into a slave by forcing me to provide for other people against my will.
PUT UP OR SHUT UP!

That's the trouble with those who attain riches while young. They never experience the wisdom-inducing refinement that comes with adversity and powerlessness. To make amends, they decide to adopt everyone they deem less fortunate. . . and make someone else pay for it.

macnvettes - March 20th, 2011 at 2:46 pm
So, Gates supports "equal access" to healthcare? Is he saying that he doesn't have his own private physician that other people can't afford? See what happens if he gets a case of terminal cancer! I wonder what he would be saying if the U.S. outlawed concierge medical services so he'd have to go to the same hospitals as everyone else!

DMYinAR - March 20th, 2011 at 2:46 pm

It sounds like Gates needs a "gray-matter" upgrade on his Windows ECON 101 made simple for "intellectuals" program…
He has a woefully inadaquete understanding of our healthcare system…
Bill, take a look at Medicare…You like what you see?

OldmanRick - March 20th, 2011 at 2:49 pm
It appears that billy gates isn't as smart as I thought. He might be a whiz bang at computer software; but somewhere along the line he lost or never had initially any common sense. That is true of many folks with high IQ's. They can solve the problems of the universe, but can't balance a checkbook, boil and egg, or tie their shoes. However, there are many just like him who feel that folks who were productive citizens their entire working lives and who ruined their health of sacrificed it for the well-being of a country are no longer worthy to live out their remaining days with adequate health care or services they provided to others. Hum, I definitely call that euthanasia. And apparently it's coming to America. The only thing they have to do now is establish an age What is it to be 70? 65? 60? Or even a low as 40? We became a throwaway society in the seventies. Now it would appear that some folks are willing to throw away grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, and anyone else who doesn't fit their profile of a productive person..

Flannigan - March 20th, 2011 at 2:50 pm
Gates ay have a lot of money, but he's an IDIOT on social issues.
Try lowering health care costs through tort reform and terminating the medical licenses of bad doctors, which would give practitioners every incentive to do things right.
And, that GDP comparison with Switzerland is total NONSENSE! Again, Gates is a rich idiot!

ArbutusJoe - March 20th, 2011 at 2:51 pm
Well said Rainmaker…Instead of "fascinating" I find it appalling, however. That someone with Bill Gates' ability to understand complex systems cannot fathom how the market order could benefit those less well off than he is not simply a mistake, it's a moral failure. He grasps at the simplest solution…governement intervention despite all the evidence in the history of mankind that trade, free exchange had help the common man the most.
Bill Gates may be a genius in his industry, but he's an abject failure when it comes to understanding the broader social environment that has benefited him.

pnipni - March 20th, 2011 at 2:51 pm
Another Democrat Socialist Billionaire telling the little people HOW they HAVE to live!
Here's a KEY question- – Has he EVER had to live under Socialist Medicine? ? NO he hasn't! and neither have
any of the other little Socialist Democrats with too much time on their hands! I've had patients who are the product of Socialized Medicine, and I could write a book on the horror stories and deaths.
They flee to America Mr. Gates; to try to save their lives! Something tells me that Gates is not being objective about this $ubject!
I boycott Microsoft. if there is another option, and without inconveniencing myrself. It may not make a big difference
to hi$ bottom line, but it WILL make a difference. Plus it makes me feel better. Also it's money for his Competition!

syvyn11 - March 20th, 2011 at 2:55 pm
GREAT! Billy-Boy can go to Cuba when he gets cancer. Not the fancy hospitals for the political elite there, but the ones for the common Cuban citizen. We'll see how he thinks of socialized medicine then.

How can someone so smart be so dumb? I guess he and Obama have that in common. Mr. Gates….do you daily get on your hands and knees and thank God and Thomas Jefferson that this country and capitalism allowed you the freedom to follow your dreams? I bet you don't, and that is why you are so lame. No gratitude.

Ashrak - March 20th, 2011 at 3:05 pm
If Gates really felt that way, that he wants to be a follower, then why doesn't he apply to model to his business?

islandboy73 - March 20th, 2011 at 3:05 pm
This morning while watching the Tom Sullivan show I learned that Bill Gates’ children were studying math at the online Khan Academy. It seems like a worthwhile program and perhaps Mr. Gates should have his children explain to him that you cannot run a country with hundred’s of duplicate programs and programs that do nothing. Two times nothing equals nothing.
He may be interested to learn that most European countries spend so little on defense because we, the USA, are the major contributor and supporter to NATO that defends all of Europe. He may also be interested to learn that Europeans’ health care cost about half of ours because our hospital employees are paid very well, and our doctors, and nurses are paid very well, and we have unions that keep more people employed than are necessary just to pump up union membership.
Mr. Gates ideas are so much nonsense, in keeping with the Democrats/Socialists but have no relationship with facts in the real world. I wonder if he is keen on the Swiss policy on gun ownership?

eRtwngr - March 20th, 2011 at 3:09 pm
Listen dipwad, shut up and tell me how to get Windows XP SP3 to install on my PC's. Until then why should I listen to you about anything?

Kevin Myers - March 20th, 2011 at 3:09 pm
Looks like Bill's thinking is like his operating system. Going from Windows 3.1, 3.11 (to lockout OS/2), NT (3.5, 3.51), 95 (eight versions), NT 4.0, 98 (two versions), Me, 2000, XP and Vista before he got it right with Windows 7. If we where to apply Bill's reasoning to our problems, we should have them solved in the year 2516.

OldmanRick - March 20th, 2011 at 3:11 pm
In a way he does. He's an advocate for cheap labor, open borders, and no unions.

I, William Henry Gates III, do solemnly swear, that if I (or a member of my family) contract any life threatening illness I will not use the resources at my disposal and will rely solely (through standard channels) on the services of a socialized medical system. Further, I will not rely on any medicine or device that was created by the United States.

TylerNull - March 20th, 2011 at 3:40 pm
There's nothing "equitable" about socialized medicine.
Those with political pull, politicians and the rich, go to the front of the queue. And when they get really sick they come to America for treatment. We create all the new procedures. We discover all the new drugs, and we invent all the new medical technologies.
We have the highest survival rates per disease across virtually all diseases known to man. That's the apples to apples comparison that Leftist Fundies never mention in all their bogus metrics.
From Soros to Gates, all the billionaires (all liberals) keep posing as benefactors of the little guy, whilst the small business owners get slaughtered by the ever increasing government mandates.

tiredofit2012 - March 20th, 2011 at 3:41 pm

Okay Gates, sell Microsoft the U.S. for one dollar and let the morons in D.C. run it for a while. Then, we'll see how much you support a socialist/communist government. And, with that assured success, then we'll talk about a government take over of health care.

He likes the Swiss system huh….?
Let's empty out a few barrios, a couple of prisons and a few giant housing projects and send them all over to Switzerland.
After that we open their border, ruin their schools and see what happens in ten years.

A friend posted this today:
progressive: Someone who sits in the DMV and thinks–"These people should be in charge of our health care delivery system."

Bill Gates? you must be referring to the guy that got his a** handed to him by Apple. Sorry, Billy, you…and your products no longer matter. Now, If Jobs had an opinion, I might listen.

Yep, exactly right. We pay double the rate the Europeans pay for their defenses. 5% of GDP vs 2.5% of GDP.
They love to complain about us but their whole countries are on US welfare.

In every hospital there is a sign that nobody will be denied care. People from all over the world come to the USA to get medical care. They are given it. If we did not have as many Illegal aliens here on the dole, we would not have this crisis. If we did not have as much fraud (what is being done about that, nothing) in medicare we would not have this problem. If we put limits on how much people can sue doctors for, we would not have this problem. We have created this problem by being negligent in moderating our current position. Still, it was the best health care in the world. Not anymore.

Bill Gates has lost it…..
We have the best medical system in the world, but it's the most expensive because of central government control and government payment system which has distorted demand and caused prices to skyrocket. We also have the most expensive educational system in the world but, thanks to the socialist democrats and their unions, we are far from the best performing educational system.
Switzerland also doesn't have the tort attorney problem like we do. And they don't allow massive invasion of illegal immigrants like our socialist democrats do.

Gates giving us his opinion reminds me of the stupid actors/actresses who weigh in on something, the effect being their stupidity is laid bare for all to see. He's really rich. Be happy with that.

TheLineIsDrawn - March 20th, 2011 at 4:59 pm
I congratulate Gates on his accomplishments and philanthropy. But I agree with you, He may understand complex computing systems that would confound the rest of us, but he understands squat about patterns of human behavior, such as the folly of appeasement.

If Billy would spend a little more time in the research labs making a better product and a lot less time trying effect change way out of his area of expertise, we would all be better off. To wit: Explorer nine. A POS browser.
