There's a straight, bright line from Newt Gingrich's election to the House of Representatives in 1979 to the election of Donald Trump, and especially his introduction of politics as blood sport into the House. Democrats were not simply loyal Americans who had a different view of the path the country should take: They were evil. The enemy.
