Well, key to the story of GOP racism is Strom Thurmond, who was a Democratic senator from South Carolina (a Dixiecrat) at the time. He led the racist white southern Democrat contingent in their mass exodus from the GOP to the Democrats in 1964, after Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act (followed by the Voting Rights Act of 1965).
