There have been millions dotted through every episode of the Simpsons right from the start. One of the things that drew many people in as fans was spotting obscure references that they knew even if most other people missed it - a feeling of ‘that was for me!’
For specifics, I am going to refer to the book ‘The Simpsons and their Mathematical Secrets’ which explains how many of the writers were maths graduates and so inserted many a maths joke. This was one of the most obvious examples:
