Click here for an article by Robert Reich (Clinton's Secretary of Labor) entitled "From Nixon to Trump: The Decline of the Common Good in American Politics, chapter 5 of his series, "The Common Good."
Reich postulates that the concept of "the common good" suffered a severe shock at the time of Watergate, and has declined ever since (hats off to Newt Gingrich), with upticks during the administrations of Reagan and Clinton, paving the way for the dog-eat-dog, win-at-any-cost ethos of the Trump era.
