Trump: Krasnov? Maybe not.

The following is a Twitter string from ChrisO_wiki, who calls himself "an independent military history author and researcher." There's been a lot of talk lately about how Trump is actually -- wittingly or unwittingly -- a Russian asset, compromised during a visit to Moscow in 1987, code-named "Krasnov" (which means "red" in Russian). ChrisO says there's a simpler explanation:

There's no need to resort to conspiracy theories about Trump being "compromised" to explain his support for Vladimir Putin. Nobody claims JD Vance supports Trump because he is "compromised". The truth is likely much simpler: Trump shares Putin's ideology.

As the Washington Post article linked below points out, Putin promoted many aspects of MAGA ideology (anti-LGBT, anti-woke, anti-migrant, anti-abortion, anti-feminism, Christian nationalism) before they became mainstream in the Republican Party.

There's a degree of political calculation here in that Putin did a lot to convince the Euro-American far right that he was one of them, but it seems to have worked very well for him.

Trump also plainly likes Putin's style and has praised him for being a "genius" and "savvy" for invading Ukraine.

So, no conspiracy theories needed: Trump is an ideological ally of Putin, not compromised by him. I would expect the next step to be the creation of a Hungary-style commercial and political alliance with Russia, either formally or de facto.

Putin, of course, is not really an ally: his main interest is to undermine America and destroy the Euro-Atlantic alliance, so expect everything he does to be geared towards that goal. On present evidence, Trump will be a very willing collaborator.

See my post below, "Is Trump a Russian asset?"
