The focus of the article is Hayden's responses to Martha Raddatz at ABC; she was asking Hayden about Trump's selection of Mike Pompeo as head of the CIA. But I think the big takeaway is Amato's quote from the Senate Intelligence Committee Study on CIA Detention and Interrogation Program:
The study’s 20 findings and conclusions can be grouped into four central themes, each of which is supported extensively in the Executive Summary:In a meeting with Marine general "Mad Dog Mattis," Trump said he asked, "What do you think of waterboarding? He said -- I was surprised -- he said, 'I've never found it to be useful.' "
1. The CIA’s “enhanced interrogation techniques” were not effective.
2. The CIA provided extensive inaccurate information about the operation of the program and its effectiveness to policymakers and the public.
3. The CIA’s management of the program was inadequate and deeply flawed.
4. The CIA program was far more brutal than the CIA represented to policymakers and the American public.
Trump said Mattis told him, " 'I've always found, give me a pack of cigarettes and a couple of beers and I do better with that than I do with torture.'"
Any torture apologist in the media should be immediately confronted with these findings of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
