Click here for an excellent article at Crooks & Liars by Dave Johnson, entitled "The Damage From Free Trade Helped Elect Trump." It's the best article I've seen that suggests a rational reason for workers in the Rust Belt to have voted for Donald Trump (if you disregard the staggering negatives that come along with The Donald).
"Free trade" -- and the outsourcing to low-wage economies that goes with it -- has had a devastating effect on the segment of society that used to prosper as (unionized) factory workers. Then came the crash of 2008 when many lost their homes, and the ensuing use of taxpayers' (read "former factory workers'") money to bail out the reckless banks that caused it all.
There's legitimate resentment there, and it urgently needs to be addressed.
